Fly-Fishing

A few steps from the back porch is the Shavers Fork of the Cheat River with over a mile of private pocket water. We stock our stretch of the river (and two large ponds) in the spring and fall with rainbow and brook trout. If fishing small mountain streams is your game, you can stalk native brookies on nearby tributaries.

If you’re bringing a fly-fishing group, we can arrange a private stocking before your visit — just ask our Rental Coordinator for details.

Fly-fishing: catch-and-release only

Mountain Biking

Cheat Mountain is considered by many to be the premiere mountain biking destination in West Virginia — if not the entire East Coast.
You can ride out directly from the Club on any number of trails and loop back, or drive thirty minutes up the Mower Tract where the Forest Service
has recently opened multiple new trails with Instagram-worthy views.

CMC does not provide bikes or helmets

Cross Country Skiing

Our trails are ideal for beginners and advanced skiers and with an average snowfall of 180 inches annually, there’s a good chance your winter
holiday at CMC will be the wonderland you’ve been dreaming of.

CMC does not provide skis, poles or boots.

Hiking

We love to hike, and truly, there’s no better place. On any given day choose from a variety of possible hikes from easy, to moderate, to epic.
Trails are maintained and marked so you don’t get lost, but the Monongahela National Forest has myriad old logging roads and game trails if you want to follow your own path.

Birding

Bald eagles, osprey, hawks, pileated woodpeckers, kingfishers and blue herons can be observed from our porches almost daily in the summer and fall. In the spring, a wide variety of warblers and other song birds pay us a visit. Over a recent June visit, a guest recorded 75 species of birds over five days. Relaxing

Summer means swimming, snorkeling and catching crayfish in the river. Play catch, horseshoes or frisbee on the wide, green lawns. Fly a kite. Read in our hammocks. Lay out your yoga mat. Pick up your guitar. When a thunderstorm passes through, break out the puzzles. And when the snow arrives, make a snowman or an igloo.

Excursions

Choose from a variety of historic scenic train rides in the area. Board in the town of Cass (30 minutes), or Elkins (45 minutes).

For the stargazers in your group, head thirty minutes down the road to the Green Bank Observatory, for an up close look at the world’s largest fully steerable telescope and a visit to the science center.
