Frequently Asked Questions
Dogs?
No. CMC does not permit pets. (Registered service dogs are the exception).
Weddings?
Sorry, no.
Accessibility?
CMC does not have an elevator to the 2nd or 3rd floor bedrooms, nor entrance ramps.
Kitchen Use?
Per county health regulations, guests are not permitted in the commercial kitchen. However, you may store medicine or speciality food items in the pantry refrigerator.
Alcohol?
BYOB.
Recycling?
Aluminum cans only.
Internet?
Yes. We have a high-speed fiber optic connection.
Phone?
Yes and No. We have a land-line in the office, but typically guests use wifi settings on their mobile phones to make and receive calls while in the lodge, or within 20 yards of the building. Because there are no cell towers on Cheat Mountain, you won’t get phone service when you’re out on the trails, regardless of your carrier.
TV?
No.
Clothing?
Layering is key. Pack a season-spanning wardrobe to allow hiking in warm sunshine one afternoon then walking the next morning in snow. Even in August temperatures can drop into the low 50’s.
Recreational Equipment?
Mostly no. You will need to bring your own gear. CMC does not provide bikes, skis, snowshoes, helmets, inner tubes or fishing equipment, but we do have a covered area for you to store equipment. Canoes, paddles and life vests are available, but please note that these are generally for leisurely paddling around the Club. The Shavers Fork is not known for white water or voyaging.
Early check-in?
Generally no. Because we’re a wilderness hotel catering to large parties, our staff needs every minute to turn-over the lodge. That said, if there are no Guests in residence prior to the start of your rental, an early check-in might be possible. Requests must be made directly with Cassie or Rob, our Rental Coordinators, not less than 3 days, or more than 7 days, before your visit.
Late check-out ?
Generally no. That said, if there are no groups scheduled to check-in following your visit, requests may be made to Dottie, our on-site Manager, the day before your departure.
Kids?
Yes. We have high chairs and 2 trundle beds.
Private Bath?
Spruce Room only. All other rooms share two country club style bathrooms on the 2nd floor.
Tea Service?
Yes. Self serve. A variety of teas and mugs are available at all times in the dining room. Guests may use the convenient hot water tap behind the bar.
Fishing License?
Yes. West Virginia requires a fishing license even on private river frontage. CMC does not sell licenses, but they are available on-line.
Fly-fishing Guide?
No. But we’ll do our best to point to fishing guides in the area. (Guides tend to come and go, hence we can’t provide a permanent link).
Poison Ivy?
Rare, and only on the roadside. None on trails, meadows or woods.
Biting insects?
Deer flies will occasionally show up when walking or hiking through clearings or meadows. Mosquitoes are around, but sparse at this altitude. The presence of ticks decreases as elevation increases which may partly explain why ticks are still a rarity at CMC.
Snakes?
No poisonous snakes to speak of. Timber rattlesnakes are in the area but they are very
reclusive and it would be extremely rare to encounter one.
Hospital?
The closest hospital is in Elkins, a 45 minutes drive. There is an excellent EMT unit attached to the fire department in nearby Durbin if an ambulance is needed in an emergency. In extreme emergencies there is an open field for helicopter landings.
Drug Store?
The closest drug store is in Elkins, a 45 minute drive CMC stocks a limited supply of toiletries and over-the-counter remedies.
Who Owns CMC?
Six families purchased the Club in 2001, not for profit, but for preservation, personal use, and to share with you. Rental fees goes directly to fuel and upkeep.
